The 1972 Winter Olympics (officially the XI Olympic Winter Games and also known as Sapporo 1972) were a winter multi-sport event held between 3 and 13 February 1972 in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. These were the first Winter Games to be held outside Europe and North America, as well as the third overall to be held outside those regions, after Melbourne in 1956 and Tokyo in 1964. Sapporo was the largest city to have held any Winter Games at the time.
