The 1976 Winter Olympics (officially the XII Olympic Winter Games and also known as Innsbruck 1976) were a winter multi-sport event held between 4 and 15 February 1976 in Innsbruck, Austria. It was the second time the Tyrolean city hosted the Games, the first being in 1964.

Bidding[]

The Games had originally been awarded to the city of Denver, Colorado, at the IOC conference of May 1970. However, in November 1972, a vote of the citizens of Denver to fund the Games was rejected by an overwhelming margin. The Denver organizing committee officially withdrew their bid eight days later. The community of Whistler, British Columbia was offered the Games, but they had to decline, due to recent political developments. Salt Lake City (later the 2002 hosts) offered to host, but the IOC was not considering any alternative sites within the United States. Innsbruck was selected as the alternate host in February 1973.

Following the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, security was tight for the 1976 Olympic Games.
