The 1992 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXV Olympiad and also known as Barcelona 1992) were an international multi-sport event held between 25 July and 9 August 1992 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. In 1986, the International Olympic Committee voted to separate the Summer and Winter Games, which had been held in the same year since 1924, and place them in alternating even-numbered years, beginning in 1994. The 1992 Summer Games were the last to be staged in the same year as the Winter Games.

Mascots[]

Cobi and Petra were the mascots of the 1992 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. They were made by Javier Mariscal. Cobi is made using the Cubist style of art. Petra was created as the Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee wanted Mariscal to make a mascot of the Paralympics to be along the lines of Cobi. They appeared on numerous commercials for Coca-Cola, Brother Industries, and other companies before the games. They also had their own TV animated show, named The Cobi Troupe.

Cobi is a male Catalan sheepdog. He is drawn using the Cubist style, which is inspired by Pablo Picasso's intepretation of a masterpiece of Las Meninas by Velazquez. Cobi's name derives from the acronym of the Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee, which is COOB.

Petra

Petra is an armless girl. She is supposed to convey bravery, positivity, extrovertism, independence, and energy. As mentioned above, she was created by Mariscal as the Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee requested him to make the Paralympic Games mascot to be along the lines of Cobi.
