The National Olympic Committee for Afghanistan was created in 1920 and recognized in 1936.
Afghan athletes were banned from competing at Sydney 2000, because of a punishment made by the IOC, due to the discrimination against women in the country. Four years later, Afghanistan sent a delegation of five athletes to the Olympic Games, of which two were women, who would be the first ever women to compete for Afghanistan.
