Aries Merritt is a track and field athlete who has competed for the United States. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
He competed in the 110 metres hurdles in 2012 as the oldest of three American athletes in the event. He won the fifth heat, 0.16 seconds ahead of Ryan Brathwaite, qualifying as fastest for the semifinals with a time of 13.07, as one of three American athletes to advance. He won the second semifinal with a time of 12.94, only a hundredth of a second slower than his own personal record, and was almost three-tenths of a second faster than the second-placed in his heat Brathwaite and 0.16 seconds faster than the second-fastest in the semifinals Dayron Robles. He stepped it up a notch in the final, with a time of 12.92 a new personal record and a world-leading time, beating his countryman Jason Richardson for the gold medal. He tried to qualify again four years later, but finished fourth in the national trials, with only the first three qualifying, missing the Olympic Games by only a hundredth of a second.
