Australia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1896. This nation has competed in Winter Olympic Games since 1936, and in every winter edition since 1952. One gold medal had been received before 1936, as George Finch earned a gold medal in 1924 for a remarkable achievement. Australia participated as part of Australasia during the Summer Olympics of 1908 and 1912.

Australia has won over 500 medals at the Summer Olympic Games and the Winter Olympic Games, although their first medal at the Winter Olympics was won in 1994. Some medals are disputed, as it is unclear which nationality the athlete had the moment (s)he won their medal.

The Australian Olympic Committee was created and recognized in 1895.
