Azerbaijan first participated at the Olympic Games in 1996, although Azerbaijani athletes have participated before, as Russian Empire (until 1912), Soviet Union (until 1988) and Unified Team (1992). This nation has participated in every edition since 1996.

Azerbaijan has won a total of 43 medals, and half of them have been won in wrestling. Azerbaijan has never won a medal at the Winter Olympic Games.

The National Olympic Committee of the Azerbaijani Republic was created in 1992 and recognized in 1993.
