Record demolishers

Have you guys seen the games in Rio, Brazil, last month? Just when it comes to swimming, Katie Ledecky smashed her own record twice in the women's competition I can't hold my feelings in. Wasn't it extremely thrilling? ..........

Team USA ditching "high tech" speed skating suits?

We've seen team suit controversy before in Beijing's 2008 summer games, when Speedo's swim suits were so far superior to others that rival companies allowed their athletes to use them in order to have the best chance to medal.

In Sochi, the talk was of Team USA's "secret weapon" - Under Armour's "revolutionary" new Mach 39 suit. (seen here →)

Now, it seems, Team USA is seriously considering a switch back to their previous suit design - also made by Under Armour - if for no other reason than to shake a possible jinx. Not only has the US has failed to reach a medal podium in the first six skating events, but the team has been shut out of the top 5 in all six. This includes a disappointing and frankly bewildering 8th place finish in the 1,000m by…

IOC videos don't play on Wikia

If the monospaced font is out to play, you know that means that this is a technical alert. Well, okay, maybe you didn't. But you do now. Anyway, you know we here at Wikia encourage communities to upload videos only from the YouTube accounts of copyright holders. And the main copyright holder for the Olympics is, obviously, the IOC, while the main source in a particular country is typically a national Olympic Committee.

The bad news for this wiki is that the IOC's official YouTube account does not allow genuine video embeds here at Wikia.

What's a "genuine embed"? One that plays on a page here at Wikia. And IOC videos don't do that. They look for all the world like a successfully-uploaded video. But when you try to play the video, you get a mess…

Sochi 2014 Spawns another Olympic Meme

Thank you, Ashley Wagner. Thank you for giving us the gift of another Olympic meme that might surpass the famous "McKayla is not impressed" meme someday! Wagner made her Olympics debut Saturday during the team figure skating event, but was a little disappointed by her score...

And when we say disappointed, we mean furious! After seeing her score of 63.10, Ashley Wagner's shocked expression took the web by storm as the newest Olympic meme! Check out the original below:

The one with Spongebob Squarepant's Patrick might be our favorite, but which one do you love the most? Does this beat McKayla's pout? Sound off in the comments below!

Highlights from the Sochi Opening Ceremony

Dreams of Russia was the theme of this year's Olympic Opening Ceremony, which took place in Sochi.  40,000 people stood in the stands, including the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

The ceremonies started with a little girl's dream sequence, who imagined all of the letters in the Russian alphabet. Each letter was matched with a famous Russian author, landmark, or artist.

There were fireworks, several performances, all of the athletes walked through the ceremony to represent their countries, and more! Here are some photo highlights from the opening ceremonies.

Shaun White Jams Wrist

During a Slopestyle training run, snowboarder Shaun White jammed his left wrist, generating some concern regarding the overall safety of slope style course, which has been taking its toll on contestants in the weeks leading up to the games.

White had this to say:

"It's frustrating to see it. It puts a damper on the whole mood and it's kind of like you're getting ready to do a big trick and you see something like that. Intimidating. Unfortunate. I'm hoping the builders can make some changes and the course has a little more of a friendly vibe. But I can't change the course. Just doing the best I can."

The multi-medal winner is expected to recover before the event.

UPDATE: White has dropped out of the event.

Fashion in Sochi: What to Wear

Sochi is a city in Russia that will host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Russia happens to be a very fashion-conscious country, so today we will talk about some of Sochi's street fashion and what you can wear to look your best at the upcoming Olympic games.

1. Black Fur
If you are going to Russia, the number one staple that you need to pack is something fur- a fur coat, fur shrug, or even a fur hat. We are loving this Russian girl's long black fur coat (in addition to her fun patterned pants).

Sochi: The Most Expensive Olympics Yet

Hey there!

We didn't think that there would be an Olympic budget that would outbit China's $40 billion bill from the Beijing Summer Games...but it seems that Russia has gone above and beyond this year.

Originally, Russia estimated that the Winter Games would cost $12 billion...but now it is estimated that they have spent over $50 billion. This is all due to the new sporting venues, roads, hotels, and other facilities that have been built purely for the Olympic games.

Mexican Skier to Wear Mariachi Suit for Sochi

Hubertus von Hohenlohe, a Mexican Olympic skier from Austria who is skiing in the Sochi games, has announced plans to ski in a skin tight mariachi suit, pictured below. Born to German nobility in Mexico, von Hohenlohe had a number of a countries he could choose from to race for internationally, but ended up going with Mexico.

“In the beginning, I remember that I was considering racing for Liechtenstein because I have a Liechtenstein passport,” von Hohenlohe said. “In the end, it seemed ideal that I do it for a country where I could control my own moves.”

One of those moves, it seems, is wearing this interesting, Mexico-repping mariachi suit.

Lindsey Vonn Goes to Sochi After All

Lindsey Vonn will be at Sochi...kind of! According to Deadline, NBC has added the gold medal winning U.S. skier as a Sochi 2014 correspondant! Headquartered stateside, Vonn will appear leading up to and throughout the Games on both NBC Sports’ coverage and Today.

It was unfortunate that Vonn couldn't compete due to a knee injury, but at least she'll still be part of the Winter Olympics in some way! On that note, who do you think is poised to take the gold now that Vonn is out of the competition? We have our hearts set on the rookie star making her Olympic debut, Mikaela Shiffrin!

Shaun White 110% For Sochi

Shaun White, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, might have skipped this year's X Games, but he is ready to tackle the big time again, this time in Sochi. Almost time for Sochi

I grew up watching the Olympics, and I'm always excited for the chance to watch all those amazing athletes make history. From snowboarding and speed skating, to luge and even curling, I just can't get enough! I remember as a kid being amazed at the science behind ski jumping (picture trying to lean forward and match that angled stance without falling over), and this year is the debut for the women's side of the event, so twice as much to watch! Snowboarding and skiing get some love with new events this year as well, the new mixed biathlon event should be awesome, and a luge relay? It should be very interesting to see how that works...

Check out the other new events debuting in Sochi, and vote for the one you're looking forward to the most:

Where Olypmic games borned

The modern Olympic Games (French: les Jeux olympiques, JO[1]) are a major international event featuring summer and winter sports in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating.[2] The Games are currently held biennially, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, meaning they each occur every four years. Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, …

My Olympic Wiki blog

I like Wikis. I like the idea of helping build a source of information and enjoyment for others. I first started on the NFL (now American Football) Wiki, and all through the season I would be working on projects when my team (the Forty Niners) were on, or when it was cold and wet outside and I felt guilty about just watching TV. I've since worked on several other wikis, and this Olympic one is the latest to absorb energy. I would suspect that the activity here is about 50 times what it was a year ago, or what it will be in a year. And I admit to being part of that 'fad group'. Bit I've found that once in a Wiki, I do go back on semi-regular occasions. And it will be interesting to watch how things develop after London, and during the rampu…

The Best Technological Innovations at London 2012

A company called AlterG has employed anti-gravity technology developed by NASA to create advanced treadmills that give the runner the feeling of only 20% of their actual weight. Running with that feeling of weightlessness is a highly effective tool for physical therapy and athletes in training. Team USA runner Shannon Rowbury, who will run the 1500m at London 2012, used AlterG to recover from a stress fecture in her femur. She was back on the ground running only 6 weeks after the diagnosis, and said that she doesn't think she "would have made the World team last year if I didn’t have AlterG to help me train through my injury."

How Many Hours of Olympic Coverage Can You Handle?

Many news outlets are highlighting the ridiculously unprecedented amount of hours of Olympic coverage that NBC Universal will be broadcasting this summer on their vast arsenal of television channels, but I'll get to that later. First I want to address the most epic news about NBCU's upcoming coverage of the London 2012 Olympics, which runs from July 27 - August 12...

That's right folks. No more tape-delayed, overly edited nonsense that cuts out all of the suspense and build-up. No more missing the opening round of Kayak Sprint or the grand finale of the 50k Race Walk (yes, walking is a sport). Don't get me wrong, I love the way NBC's slickly-produced back stories get me all teary eyed and proud to be an American, and Bob Costas is a legend, …

More Riots in London a Year Before Olympics

Exactly a year from now, London will be hosting the Summer Olympic Games (19 sports on the day, to be exact), but the condition of the city right now is not appropriate for hosting one of the world's biggest events. For the third night in a row, rioters have ravaged, looted, and set fire to the city, the worst civil unrest in memory.

In a stroke of tragic irony, all 204 competing nations have sent managers to London this week, specifically to prepare for transportation, accommodations, and food for their Olympic teams. Obviously their concerns have shifted to security issues, as they've witnessed London's most urban areas become an apocalyptic nightmare. Croydon, Hackney, Notting Hill, Clapham, Peckham, East Dulwich, Enfield, Islington, Hac…

London Calling

LOCOG, the organizing committee of London 2012, has recently been using the Clash song London Calling for their promotional material, causing quite a stir. Nobody is really upset about it (shame on you if you don't like the Clash or this song), but everyone is baffled. If you're not sure why this song choice is puzzling, just take a look at the lyrics of London Calling over at the Lyric Wiki. You could also listen to the song below, but good luck understanding Joe Strummer's every word.

As you may have gathered by now, London Calling doesn't exactly paint a perfect picture of the city. Usually, organizers of an Olympics would want to employ a controversial-free song, that's both tourist-inviting and listener-friendly. The post-apocalyptic London C…

London 2012 Medal Designs

Every Olympian spends their days dreaming of winning an Olympic medal - whether it be a bronze, silver, or gold (of course they would prefer the gold medals, obviously). It should come as no surprise that every Olympics takes great pride in the crafting and design of creating their medals. London has finally revealed the medals that they will be giving out during the London 2012 games.

Highlights of the medals include -

  • They weigh in at 14 ounces, which makes them the heaviest in history
  • Intersecting lines which convey togetherness and outreach
  • The River Thames behind the logo
  • 2,100 of these will be given out during the London 2012 Games.

New Olympic sport - tweeting

The official London 2012 Olympics website now wants its viewers to compete in a brand new sport discipline. It's a contest in which the country with the most Twitter, YouTube and Flickr followers wins. So far, there have been over 20,000 tweets, with the United Kingdom in the lead, followed by Brazil, the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands.

To enter the contest, you need to tweet the hashtag #1YearToGo (as the Olympics begin on July 27, 2012) and your country's three-letter code. What country are you supporting?
