Brazil first participated at the Olympic Games in 1920, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the 1928 Games. Brazil has also participated in the Winter Olympic Games since 1992, though to this date no Brazilian athlete has won a medal in winter sports.
Brazilian athletes have won a total of 91 medals, with volleyball, sailing and judo as the top medal-producing sports. 1996 and 2008 were the years with the most medals, with 15, and 2004 had the most golds with 5. Furthermore, a Brazilian athlete has been awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal.
The National Olympic Committee for Brazil is the Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro, which was created in 1914 and recognized in 1935. Brazil won the rights to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
