Damian Warner is a track and field athlete who has competed for Canada. He competed at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
Warner surpassed all expectations at his Olympic debut in 2012 when he finished fifth in the men's decathlon with a total score of 8,442, beating his previous personal best by 335 points.
Four years later in Rio de Janeiro, he trailed the leader Ashton Eaton at the start of the two-day event but following a surge by Kevin Mayer and mediocre performances in the shot put and high jump slipped Warner to third. On the second day of the competition, Warner posted the fastest time from a field of decathletes in the 100 metres hurdles to restore his runner-up spot before dropping behind Mayer again in dismal discus throw. Following the pole vault, he threatened to fall behind Kai Kazmirek but ultimately protected his top three spot with a superb javelin throw. Warner completed a two-day event with a bronze medal, lagging more than a hundred points behind Eaton and Mayer. Moreover, he became the second Canadian decathlete to ascend the Olympic podium, following Dave Steen at Seoul 1988.
The decathlon at Tokyo 2020 witnessed an intense rivalry between Warner and world-record holder Mayer for the Olympic title, following the retirement of Eaton in 2017. On day one, Warner opened the event marvelously by repeating his world decathlon best time in the 100 metres dash and recording an Olympic-record distance in the long jump. He set season bests in the shot put and 400 metres to protect his leading position from the rest of the decathletes. He began the second day with an Olympic decathlon best time in his signature race (100 metres hurdles) and matched his personal best of 4.90 metres on the pole vault to maintain his 361-point lead over Mayer. After throwing a javelin with a season best of 73.09, Warner ran under the sub-4:32 range to finish fifth in a historic 1500 metres race and successfully eclipse the 9,000-point mark, becoming the fourth decathlete to attain such feat. Moreover, Warner established a new Olympic record of 9,018, overhauling the identical previous score from Eaton in 2016 and Roman Sebrle in 2004 by 25 points.
