Gabrielle Douglas is a gymnast who has competed for the United States. She competed at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Douglas arrived at her first Olympics in 2012 as a top medal favorite in the all-around and apparatus routines. She helped the American women, dubbed the Fierce Five, reclaim the team all-around title for the first time since Atlanta 1996. Moreover, she was the only gymnast on the U.S. team to perform all four apparatus (floor exercise, vault, balance beam, and uneven bars) during the final. Douglas continued the streak of American dominance for the third time with a gold medal in the women's individual all-around routine, becoming the first African-American gymnast to attain the feat and the first American gymnast to successfully hold both individual and team all-around titles at a single Olympiad. On the apparatus finals, she struggled to recapture her best form for another medal contention, finishing seventh in the balance beam and last of the eight women registered in the uneven bars. Because of the unremarkable results, Douglas became the first all-around champion to have missed a single medal in any individual apparatus event since the women's gymnastics was officially included to the Olympic program in 1952.
Four years later in Rio de Janeiro, Douglas was heavily favored to defend the all-around title for the first time since Mexico City 1968 but she succumbed to the two-per-country limitation rule with a third spot behind her teammates Simone Biles and Alexandra Raisman in the qualifying stage of the women's artistic gymnastics. Despite narrowly missing a chance for her title defense on the individual side, she helped the U.S. women's gymnastics squad, dubbed the Final Five, successfully defend the all-around title by a massive 8.209-point margin ahead of their Russian rivals and claim a third gold medal of her Olympic career.
