The 1976 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XII Olympic Winter Games, were a winter multi-sport event which was celebrated February 4–15, 1976 in Innsbruck, Austria. It was the second time the Tyrolean city hosted the Games.

Denver bid

The games had originally been awarded to the city of Denver, Colorado, at the IOC conference of May 1970. But in November, 1972 a vote of the citizens of Denver to fund the games was rejected by an overwhelming margin. The Denver organizing committee officially withdrew their bid eight days later. The community of Whistler, British Columbia (which would become part of the Vancouver 2010 games) was offered the games, but they had to decline, due to recent political developments. Salt Lake City, Utah (later the 2002 hosts) offered to host as an alternate, but the IOC was not considering any alternative sites within the United States. Innsbruck was selected as the alternate host in February, 1973.

Following the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, security was tight for the 1976 games.
