Kévin Mayer is a track and field athlete who has competed for France.
He competed at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
After finishing fifteenth in the men's decathlon at his Olympic debut in 2012, Mayer returned to his second Games four years later in Rio de Janeiro as one of the top medal favorites. He improved his personal outdoor bests in the 100 metres, shot put, 400 metres, and pole vault to move into a solid runner-up spot ahead of the Canadian decathlete Damian Warner. Although he ran through the 1500 metres race with the fourth-fastest time, Mayer completed a two-day event by securing a silver with a new personal best score, finishing behind the double Olympic champion Ashton Eaton by 59 points.
The decathlon at Tokyo 2020 witnessed an intense rivalry between Mayer and Warner for the Olympic title, following the retirement of Eaton in 2017. Crippled with several injuries, Mayer fared poorly across all five events that ended his first-day run in the fifth spot. On day two, he rebounded from a disastrous first-day feat to successfully throw a discus with a remarkable 48.08 and clear a height of 5.20 on the pole vault, moving him closer to the podium. He improved his mark by throwing a javelin with personal best score of 73.09, as he quickly trailed Warner into the overall leaderboard by less than a hundred points. The quest for the medals became furious in the 1500 metres race, as Mayer chased a large peloton of runners through the track to maintain his position for the second consecutive silver medal of his Olympic decathlon career.
