Montreal was the host of the XXI summer olympics. For the first time ever Canada hosted an Olympic Games. They would later host the1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary and then the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. This was the first ever Olympics where the Cauldron was lite by two people. They chose two teenagers to symbolise the youth of Canada and the two founding groups of Canada.
Although this was a big event for Canada it came at a major cost to Montreal. It was a finacial disaster because the original estimated 310 million dollar cost gets pushed to 1.5 billion after labour problems, financial mismanagement, the adition of an extravagant stadium, added security (which was definately needed after the 1972 Munich Games) and other expenses
