Anastasia Valeryevna Liukin was born on October 30, 1989 in Moscow, Russia. Liukin's parents were both gymnasts, her father Valeri Liukin won two gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympic games and her mother Anna Kotchneva was a world champion rhythmic gymnast. Liukin and her parents moved to the USA when she was a small child. Liukin was a member of the 2008 USA Olympic team where she won the gold medal in the all-around competition, three silver medals (team, uneven bars, balance beam) and a bronze medal in floor exercise. Luikin's medal total in 2008 tied Shannon Miller's for the most medals won by a US gymnast in a non-boycotted Olympic games. Liukin attempted a comeback in 2012 to try and make a second Olympic games hoping to help the US on the uneven bars where they are weak as a team. Liukin was unable to put together a clean routine at the National Championships or the Olympic trials and was not selected as a member of the team.
