Shawn Machel Johnson was born on January 19, 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Johnson was a member of the 2008 USA Olympic team where she won three silver medals (team, all-around and floor) and a gold medal on the balance beam. After the Olympics, Johnson competed on season eight of Dancing with the Stars where she won the mirror ball trophy. In January 2010, Johnson tore her ACL while skiing which required reconstructive knee surgery. Johnson returned to gymnastics training in May 2010 in hopes that she could make the US team in 2012. Johnson retired from competitive gymnastics in June 2012 due to problems with her left knee.
