Shawn Machel Johnson was born on January 19, 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the 2007 World All-Around and Floor Champion. Johnson was a member of the 2008 USA Olympic team where she won three silver medals (team, all-around and floor) and a gold medal on the balance beam. After the Olympics, Johnson competed on season eight of Dancing with the Stars where she won the mirror ball trophy. In January 2010, Johnson tore her ACL, MCL and Meniscus tendons while skiing, which required reconstructive knee surgery. Johnson returned to gymnastics training in May 2010 in hopes that she could make the US team in 2012. She re-injured her knee during training, and had to have a second surgery which delayed her comeback. In 2011 Johnson returned to elite competition and made the 2011 Pan American Games team where she helped the team win a Gold medal and also won a Silver medal on Uneven Bars. Johnson retired from competitive gymnastics in June 2012 due to continued problems with her left knee.
