Simona Amanar was born on October 7, 1979 in Constanta, Romania. Amanar was a member of the 1996 and 2000 Romanian Olympic teams. Amanar originally won the silver medal in women's artistic gymnastics individual all-around in 2000 but her teammate Andreea Raducan was stripped of her gold medal after testing positive for a banned substance when she took a cold medicine. Amanar has refused to acknowledge that she is the all-around champion from 2000 believing that Raducan was wrongly stripped of her title. Amanar also won gold medals in 1996 for vault and for team in 2000. One of the most difficult vaults being performed at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games is named for Amanar. Amanar retired from competitive gymnastics in 2000.

Personal Life

Amanar married Cosmin Tabara on March 9, 2002 and they welcomed a son, Alexandru Iosif later that year.
