Sochi, Russia is planned to be the site for the XXII Winter Olympic Games.

Historic Moments

Women's ski jumping will make it's olympic debut in the Sochi games. The event was rejected for the Vancouver games twice by the IOC for "lacking competition". It was not expected even after going to the Canadian supreme court because the court did not have the power to change it on their own. The IOC only changed their decision after a member observed the Oslo World tournament in March 2011 and was "impressed by the quality" of the athletes as they preformed through windy and foggy conditions.

The IOC also announced a couple other events on April 6, 2011, that will make thier debut in Sochi. These inclue team luge, team figure skating, half pike skiing for men and women and biatholon mixed relay.

The IOC also stated that slopestyle skiing and snowboarding for both men and women and a team alpine skiing event are currently under evaluation to become events for Sochi as well.

Controversy

There is currently a petition trying to take the olympic games away from Sochi and put it somewhere else because of the Russian Bombings of Georgia in 2008. Currently Sochi is still planned to host the games but it is unknown if the petition will be successful or if Sochi will go ahead as planned.
