Svetlana Vasilyevna Khorkina was born on January 19, 1979 in Belgorod, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. Khorkina was a member of the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Russian Olympic teams. Khorkina is a two time Olympic gold medalist on the uneven bars event. Khorkina won a total of seven Olympic medals between her three Olympic trips. In 2004, Khorkina contested her score on the vault during the all-around final believing that she was underscored and that it cost her the title. It was noted that Khorkina was most likely overscored in her uneven bars routine and even if she had been scored how she felt she should have on the vault she still would of lost to Carly Patterson. Khorkina retired from competitive gymnastics in 2004 and is now involved with politics in Russia. Khorkina will be an ambassador for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games when they come to Sochi, Russia.
