The men's 400 metre freestyle of Swimming 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 6 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Aquatics Stadium. With 50 athletes competing, the event was won by Mack Horton from Australia, with Sun Yang from China taking the silver medal and Gabriele Detti from Italy taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two rounds. In the qualification round, all competitors set in a time in heats of three to eight swimmers. The eight swimmers with the fastest times advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Fifty athletes qualified for the event, with Mack Horton as favorite with the world-leading time. His biggest competitor would be defending Olympic champion and reigning world champion Sun Yang, although there were plenty of other athletes who could contend for the medals. These included the world silver medalist James Guy, Ryan Cochrane, European champion Gabriele Detti, and Connor Jaeger. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders included Conor Dwyer, defending silver medalist Park Tae-hwan, David McKeon, Stephen Milne, Henrik Christiansen, and Jordan Pothain.
