A company called AlterG has employed anti-gravity technology developed by NASA to create advanced treadmills that give the runner the feeling of only 20% of their actual weight. Running with that feeling of weightlessness is a highly effective tool for physical therapy and athletes in training. Team USA runner Shannon Rowbury, who will run the 1500m at London 2012, used AlterG to recover from a stress fecture in her femur. She was back on the ground running only 6 weeks after the diagnosis, and said that she doesn't think she "would have made the World team last year if I didn’t have AlterG to help me train through my injury." [1] Run, Shannon, Run!

As an Olympic cyclist, it might be hard to prepare yourself mentally and physically for a race course to which you have zero access beforehand. Training for far-off courses has been especially hard for the isolated Australian team, but this is no longer a problem. Top cyclists and scientists came together at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra to develop a virtual model of the London 2012 cycling course. The team has yet to ride on the course in reality, but they've already completed the track multiple times in training back home in Australia. Good on ya, Aussies!

A year ago, a South African named Oscar Pistorious qualified for London 2012 as a runner in the 400 meters and the 4x400 meter relay. You've probably heard of him. They call him "Blade Runner" and "The Fastest Man with No Legs". That's right, Oscar runs on carbon-fiber prosthetic legs, a technology that has been rapidly improving every year he's been competing. His prosthetics have been an extremely controversial subject for the IOC, but next week, Pistorious will finally become the first disabled man to compete against able-bodied athletes in the Olympics. And he owes it all to the amazing scientists behind the technology. If he'd been born 100, or even 50 years ago, people would have laughed at his athletic ambitions. Now, he's going for gold!

Unlike FIFA, the WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) is welcoming technology with open arms. They have no choice, really, as the Korean martial art's foothold in the Olympics has been jeopardized since becoming an official sport at Sydney 2000. Despite having 70 million practitioners worldwide, notable critics have said it should be removed from the games because of its complex scoring system and inconsistent judging. [2] Well haters, starting this week, you will have no argument. At London 2012, the WTF will implement a new scoring system, PSS, which automatically measures the strength of each kick to the body and scores it. It has been tested for the past 2 years and also allows for an instant video replay, thus insuring a Taekwando competition that will be as fair and transparent as possible.

Electronic Starting Blocks

The watch company Omega, the official timekeepers of the London 2012 Olympic Games, have developed new starting block technology for both track and field and swimming events. The new track and field blocks (pictured at right) are an especially welcome addition to the sport, as it marks the first time they will be entirely electronic. As opposed to the old system, which has been in place since the Montreal 1976 games, "the new blocks use electronic sensors that measure the force against the block to determine reaction time" [3], thus ensuring that false-start disqualifications are extremely accurate. The new swimming starter blocks will light up to indicate who placed, which is more of an improvement on the spectators end rather than for the athletes.

Many news outlets are highlighting the ridiculously unprecedented amount of hours of Olympic coverage that NBC Universal will be broadcasting this summer on their vast arsenal of television channels, but I'll get to that later. First I want to address the most epic news about NBCU's upcoming coverage of the London 2012 Olympics, which runs from July 27 - August 12...

For the first time ever, NBCOlympics.com will live-stream every event of every sport, totaling 3,500 hours of coverage

That's right folks. No more tape-delayed, overly edited nonsense that cuts out all of the suspense and build-up. No more missing the opening round of Kayak Sprint or the grand finale of the 50k Race Walk (yes, walking is a sport).

Don't get me wrong, I love the way NBC's slickly-produced back stories get me all teary eyed and proud to be an American, and Bob Costas is a legend, but I'm glad we finally earned the right (from our corporate overlords) to watch every single event live.

NBCU has finally come to terms with reality: we want to watch content when and where we so desire, with limited commercial interruption. Realistically, for an Olympic event we actually care about, the "when" is "live" and the "where" is under our bed covers or behind our cubicle walls, on a laptop, iPhone, or iPad. NBC is developing two apps, one for streaming live events, and one for highlight shows.

Let's face it, the highly sought-after 18-35 demographic does not watch television in the traditional sense anymore. We stream stuff on our computers. Take this TV Guide quote from Joel McHale (star of the NBC show Community) as an example- "I did a stand-up show at the University of Arizona and there were 30 kids who ran the event. I said, 'How many of you watch Community?' and they all raised their hands, which was great. I asked, 'How many watch it Thursdays at 8pm?' Zero hands. I asked, 'How many of you have TVs?' Four hands. I asked, 'How many of you watch on computers?' All hands went up."

Enough said.

For those of you who still watch regular television, NBCU will be showing 2,035 hours of the Olympics across 9 channels

NBC, NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, Telemundo, two specialty channels, and a 3D platform will all broadcast this summer's Olympics for the equivalent of 231 days, beating the 2008 Beijing coverage by almost 2,000 hours.

Important Figures:

272.5 Hours - broadcasted by NBC over 17 days. Daytime coverage will begin on most weekdays at 10 a.m. ET/PT and at 5 a.m. ET/PT on the weekends and running until midnight.

56 Hours - of long-form tennis televised by Bravo from July 28 to Aug. 3.

292.5 Hours - of U.S. team sports broadcasted by NBC Sports Network, the home of Team USA, the most ever for an Olympic cable network.

73 Hours - of Boxing broadcasted on CNBC, including the debut of women's boxing. Everything from elimination bouts to the men's and women's finals will air over 16 days.

770 Hours - of basketball and soccer on specialty channels available to cable, satellite and telco providers.

155.5 Hours - of long-form Olympic programming on MSNBC, including up to 18 medal rounds and 20 sports, from badminton to basketball to soccer to wrestling.

I'm sure I'm missing something, like the amount of hours the Olympics will be broadcast on a special 3D channel, but you get the point. The London 2012 Olympics will be the most viewer-accessible Olympics of all time, and that's dandy!

For the third night in a row, rioters have ravaged, looted, and set fire to the city, the worst civil unrest in memory.

In a stroke of tragic irony, all 204 competing nations have sent managers to London this week, specifically to prepare for transportation, accommodations, and food for their Olympic teams. Obviously their concerns have shifted to security issues, as they've witnessed London's most urban areas become an apocalyptic nightmare. Croydon, Hackney, Notting Hill, Clapham, Peckham, East Dulwich, Enfield, Islington, Hackney, Camden Town, Soho and Bethnal Green are just some of the neighborhoods that have been burned and looted by gangs, but the violence has also spread to other cities in the U.K., including Birmingham and Liverpool.

As the world watches thousands of police in riot gear failing to cope with London's unrest, one must wonder if this is a city that is prepared to host the Olympics? Since the riots began, LOCOG has maintained that proper security plans are in place and they are constantly being reviewed. Security has always been a top priority for these games since the day London got the bid, but police and firefighters have already admitted that they are overstretched and cannot respond to every call. Despite such deficiency, LOCOG has not expressed concern over security for the games; they've only admitted that it's not exactly a great advert to bring people to the city.

So far, there has been no damage to the Olympic Venues, but soccer/football matches are being cancelled. Wednesday's friendly between England and Holland at Wembley Stadium has been cancelled, as well as every league match in the South and East London. East London is where a lot of the riots are occurring, a section of the city that is home to the Olympic Park.

As a result of these riots, would you cancel a trip to the Olympics? Comment below, and check out my last blog post to analyze a really unfortunate coincidence involving these riot's and London 2012's choice of advertising music.

LOCOG, the organizing committee of London 2012, has recently been using the Clash song London Calling for their promotional material, causing quite a stir. Nobody is really upset about it (shame on you if you don't like the Clash or this song), but everyone is baffled. If you're not sure why this song choice is puzzling, just take a look at the lyrics of London Calling over at the Lyric Wiki.
As you may have gathered by now, London Calling doesn't exactly paint a perfect picture of the city. Usually, organizers of an Olympics would want to employ a controversial-free song, that's both tourist-inviting and listener-friendly. The post-apocalyptic London Calling is not such a song, but quite the opposite. But instead of wondering why LOCOG didn't take the usual Mickey Mouse route, we should be thanking them.

I'm sure they didn't go out on this limb intentionally (admen are notorious for not actually listening to the lyrics or paying attention to details), but I praise the result. The titular call to London is a no-brainer, and although the rest of the lyrics are threatening, disturbing, and uninviting, it's a perfectly ironic message for an event that has been raising concerns over security and terrorism since London first won the bid. In my opinion, the only way to overcome fear and terror is by mocking it. Using a song about a flooded, zombie-infested London to bring people to the city is strange, yes, but it's so London, and more importantly, so 2012.

Previously, he was the 4th best runner on South Africa's roster of 400m sprinters, but this particular time would have earned him 5th place at the 2008 Olympics and 4th place at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, so it seems he is peaking when it counts. Pistorius, whose legs were amputated as an infant, is looking to become the first runner to compete in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, his road to the Olympics hasn't come easy.

While struggling against the International Association of Athletics Federations for his right to compete against able-bodied runners, many critics suggested that his carbon fiber artificial legs might in fact be giving him an an advantage. "The Fastest Man on No Legs" has long been the world record holder in Paralympic competitions for the 100m, 200m, and 400 m, but it wasn't until 2008 that the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that he would be eligible to compete in non-Paralympic events, including the Olympics.

On August 27th, he will be the first amputee sprinter to compete at the World Championships in South Korea. Then, if all goes to plan, he will do the same at Olympics, on his quest to become the world's fastest man.

Behold, the biggest of the macs. The artist's rendering above depicts the 32,000-square-feet temporary McDonald's that will be open for business during the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Although the restaurant will only be open for 29 days, it will become the biggest McDonald's in the world, with seating for 1,500 people. In total, four temporary McDonald's will be built in and around the Olympic Park , including one inside the Athletes' Village.

The logistics team at McDonald's expects this behemoth of a restaurant to serve around 1.75 million people during the month that it will exist, feeding the visitors who've come to London for the Olympics and the Paralympics. McDonald's has been an official sponsor of the Olympics since 1976, but this will be their largest project to date, and it's expected to set sales records. They will employ 2,000 people at this location alone, with 200 of them being brought in from other nations to serve the diverse crowd of burger-eaters.

The gold arches and gold medals have been a predictable team for a while, but this is taking it to the next level!

The infantile country declared it's independence on July 9th and became a member of the United Nations on July 14th, after a bitter war against the Sudanese in the North. Surprisingly, the process of creating a National Olympic Committee and getting it officially recognized by the IOC is not as swift. IOC officials have made it clear that South Sudan will probably not be able to get a NOC approved before the games. But in that event, South Sudanese athletes will be invited to participate "under other colors"[1], a notion that remains a mystery. One cannot imagine that they would participate for Sudan, from whom they just seceded, so the IOC must have something up their sleeve.

A more important matter for South Sudan's Olympic team is the question of who will qualify. Undoubtedly, their most successful athlete is NBA star Luol Deng, but he has already committed to playing basketball for Great Britain, and it would be impossible for South Sudan to put together team sports with just a year's notice. There is hope for a future basketball team, however, as Luol Deng has already returned to South Sudan to celebrate their independence and host a basketball clinic.

South Sudan's new flag
Added by Porterfield

That leaves track and field athletes, of which the region has produced many, but their best runner, Lopez Lomong, has already been participating for the USA (he was chosen to carry the U.S. flag at the Opening Ceremony in Beijing). Such is the underlying problem of fielding an Olympic team, as all of the country's best athletes departed to places like Great Britain and the USA because of the war against the North. Yet everyone is confident that South Sudan will send at least one athlete to London. Their best hope to send an entire team, under their new colors, probably won't be until the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, for which they've already applied.

The Olympics Wiki welcomes South Sudan to the competition!

In fact, quite the opposite effect is happening, as the team has been praised as heroes upon their return. Yes, they made an impressive, miraculous run to the final, but at this point, shouldn't the whole, "it's OK, they did their best" spiel be reserved for boys and girls? This was a team of highly-skilled women, ranked number one in the world and undefeated against Japan in 23 games. They should have won. They took the lead twice, but didn't make any tactical changes or substitutions. They kept attacking, aggressively, allowing Japan to sneak in their equalizers. They should have won, but they screwed the proverbial pooch.

After extra time, the US women converted only one penalty kick in the shootout, which I would say is impossible if Brazil hadn't done the exact same in a simultaneous match against Paraguay in the Copa America [1]. Penalty kicks are like free throws, and if you miss them under pressure, to claim a championship, you should not be praised. Yet, these choke artists are getting treated like queens. That would never happen in men's sports, and it shouldn't happen just because the underperformers in this scenario have XX chromosomes. That's like saying they played well... for girls, which is straight up sexist.

These are professional women who are very good at what they do, and they should be treated as such. They went in as the overwhelming favorite, out shot their opponents 27-14, and absolutely dominated the first half of the game, but could not convert a shot to save their lives. In the words of Irish soccer commentator Tommy Smyth, the only known person to criticize the team thus far (other than myself), "they couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with a cannon." [2] I think the team should be getting much more flak, but with all of the heroine's praises I'm seeing, I'm reluctant to deliver that flak in full.

Instead, I will only point out that they deserve their fair share of bad press. I will also point out they must keep their heads up and start working towards the 2012 Olympics in London. Moving on should come easy for the team, however, as the media has been overly sympathetic after their epic failure. It would be much harder to work towards 2012 while being aggressively condemned by your own fans for spoiling their summer. At least they got that going for them.

The art-deco style ship holds 581 passengers with an equal number of staff members. It features a swimming pool, grand ballroom, steam baths, and a driving range, so it's no surprise that three nights during the Olympics will cost £4,366 (approximately $7,000) per person. However, if you're German and you can afford it, I'd recommend booking a room now! What could be better than watching Dirk Nowitzki dominate in the Basketball Arena before retiring to the ship in the heart of London for a game of shuffleboard? Nichts.

Speaking of Basketball, if you want a chance at winning 4 free tickets to see hoops at London 2012, click here!

The term Pom (short for Pommy), which has muddled origins, is an alternative name for British people used primarily in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Some still consider it an offensive word, but technically, it's no longer derogatory. The unofficial demonym was ruled unoffensive by the Australian Advertising Standards Board in 2006 and by the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority in 2010 [1]. But does that mean it's still okay to use? Because it has many contested etymologies, I'd say yes. How can you say a word is offensive without even knowing it's origin?

Either way, news of the Australians' amusingly-named mission has already reached Great Britain's Olympic team, and it seems to be doing the trick of riling them up. The chairman of the British Olympic Association, Lord Moynihan, isn't exactly offended, saying, "“I think the competitive banter we have between us and the competitiveness is absolutely brilliant. It makes the Games.” [2] However, he has since made a bet with his Australian counterpart, John Coates, on who will finish the 2012 games with more medals. The stakes? A magnum of champagne for however many more gold medals the victor wins.

I'm personally looking forward to a battle of both wits and athletics between the two Olympic teams. Let the games begin!

The potential all-star band was rumored to include the two remaining Beatles, Mick Jagger, and Johnny Rotten. At this point, the formation of "The Rolling Sex Beatles" is still all speculation, but Paul McCartney just confirmed his appearance at the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony.

When asked about the subject in June, McCartney said he would love to perform, but had not yet been approached by organizers. This time around he told Access Hollywood, "I hear there's a rumour that I might be involved. I've not actually heard anything [specific] about it yet ... but they are now planning the music." [1] Things are looking good for Beatles fans, as The Sun also reports that Danny Boyle and the organizers have expressed a strong desire for a performance by Paul, Ringo Starr, and even the offspring of George Harrison and John Lennon, all together now!

Coldplay, the Spice Girls, and Girls Aloud are the other groups rumored to perform at the Opening Ceremony, but let's get real, if you're attempting to show off the best that Britain has to offer, nothing even compares to the mighty Beatles. It would be more appropriate to spin an old Beatles record on a crummy sound system than hand over the stage to the Spice Girls. Beckham's appearance at the handover ceremony in Beijing made sense, but his wife and her girls performing would be an abomination.

Before I go any further, let me answer your obvious questions...

Q: Where is Pyeongchang? A: South Korea

Q: Hold up, you can ski in South Korea? A: Yes, as well as Morocco, Lebanon, Bolivia, Turkey, and a building in Dubai, amongst other unexpected places.

Bid Logo
Added by Porterfield

Located in the Taebaek Mountains, the county of Pyeongchang is home to South Korea's most popular winter sports activities as well as several famous Buddhist temples. The mountains top out at just over 1000 m (3,250 ft), but they have long, snowy winters and enough modern amenities to support the Olympic games.

Pyeongchang was an easy choice for the International Olympic Committee, after they were narrowly defeated by Vancouver for 2010 and Sochi for 2018. All this time, Pyeongchang has been laying the foundation for Olympic venues, including a world-class ski resort called Alpensia and a ski-jump tower that has already become iconic for the area.

The iconic ski jump tower
Added by Porterfield

Furthermore, giving the bid to Annecy or Munich would have meant putting the Winter Olympics in Europe for the fifth time in eight Olympics, and the IOC has been adamantly opposed to such geographical dominance in recent times.

The last Winter Olympics hosted by an Asian country was Nagano in 1998, making it a perfectly timed gap of exactly 20 years. Also, South Korea hosted the summer games in Seoul in 1988, so it's pretty much destiny.
The only question remaining is the status of South Korea's greatest winter athlete, Kim Yu-Na, who is currently the best female figure skater in the world (she won gold in Vancouver). Kim will only be 27 when her native country hosts the Olympics, but will she still be lacing up the skates?

Do you have qualms with the 2012 Olympics? Did you apply for tickets and get completely rejected? Are you worried about security? Congested infrastructure? Too many obnoxious tourists? Not enough toilets?

Well, with just a year to go until London hosts the summer games, the BBC is offering you a chance to express your opinions and ask questions in a televised debate. Jeremy Vine will be hosting the programme, which will feature the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and the Chairman of LOCOG Lord Sebastian Coe. The pair will be fielding questions about all aspects of the games from a live studio audience and e-mail submissions.

As a result of the 2012 ticketing scheme, many British citizens have been quite upset with LOCOG in recent months, so the debate is heating up to be quite entertaining. It will be filmed on July 26th in Stratford and broadcast on BBC One in London the following day.

If have you a question for the Mayor or Lord Coe, or if you want to be in the studio audience, e-mail yourlondon@bbc.co.uk. The BBC asks that you include your contact phone number and if you're submitting a question, include whether it's intended for the Mayor or Lord Coe.

Hopefully for the interested non-Londoners, we will be able to catch clips of this debate on YouTube! Comment below with questions you would want to ask these guys.

Of course, Angle originally got his start on the Olympic mats, winning gold at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, before taking his talents to the professional wrestling scene. He had a broken neck when he won that medal, so if there's a man tough enough to do a repeat 16 years later at the age of 43, that man is Kurt "The American Hero/The Wrestling Machine" Angle.

ZOO conducted a great interview with the wrestler, revealing that he's coming back to the sport because of his "competitive streak" and because "the challenge of the Olympics" is something that he missed. Angle should be able to make the team, considering his experience, but how he fares depends on how well we can handle the younger generation of wrestlers. The transition from Olympic wrestling to professional wrestling seems like a natural move, but the two sports are like apples and oranges, and a reverse transition may prove to be difficult. If Kurt Angle can pull it off again, here's hoping that they give him a microphone on the Olympic podium. Now that would steal the show!

It's good news for Olympian-obsessed fans and Twitter-lovers alike, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently gave the go ahead for athletes to use social media at any point during the 2012 summer games in London. Think about the possibilities! You could be watching Michael Phelps swim on live television and read exactly what he is thinking between races.

In most professional sports leagues, the use of Twitter is prohibited. In the NFL, players are not allowed to tweet for 30 minutes before a game, during the game, and for 30 minutes afterwards. But in a surprise move, the usually conservative IOC has set a progressive new precedent, deciding to permit athletes, coaches, and trainers to blog, tweet, and post photos about their experiences during the Olympics, as long as they restrict themselves to a "first-person, diary-type format" [1].

Of course, there are even more specific stipulations. The IOC will create a website specifically for monitoring the athletes' use of social media, and players could get booted from the games for the following violations:

Commercial use

Journalism. Athletes will not be allowed to "report on competition or comment on the activities of other participants or accredited persons, or disclose any information which is confidential or private in relation to any other person or organisation." [2]

Audio and video from inside the venues

X-rated content

Political demonstrations

I love the idea of complete access into an Olympian's experience, but I fear that some athletes, already accustomed to their social media ways, might suffer as a result. The anti-journalism rule seems a bit subjective, and I'm worried that there will be a couple athletes who get kicked out of London 2012 because they can't break 21st century habits. It would be a shame to see someone get disqualified for tweeting something so harmless as, "Usain Bolt is taller in person!". What do you think?

Most people who applied didn't get any tickets, and those who did are still not happy with the tickets they got. If you fall into those categories, this week is your last chance!

For British folks who got nothing the first go-around, a second chance sale of remaining tickets begins this Friday, June 24th, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The easiest tickets to get have been the ones at old venues or outside of the city, but the Olympic Park is where all the action will be! Here is a quick guide to the best remaining tickets for events that will put you right in the heart of the 2012 games:

Athletics - Olympic Stadium.

In the past few months, the Olympics Wiki has been following the ongoing development, or lack thereof, of a Football team that will represent Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Neal Vaughan wrote a great blog post about the situation, to which I refer for a bit of context. There is also a section of the Football 2012 page devoted entirely to the "Team Great Britain Controversy", which includes a poll for those of you who want to have your say (although I strongly encourage commenting below as well). Finally, if you desire a list of pros and cons on the matter, check out this debate. Having said all that, this week was a defining moment for the entire saga in the oddest way possible.

As you may have gathered from the aforementioned links, England's Football Association and the British Olympic Association are in favor of a unified G.B. team. This would mean that G.B. could select top players from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. However, the football associations of the latter three countries have been vehemently opposed to this "dream team" format from the beginning, fearing a dilution of their nation's programs. Their stance was made quite clear a couple months ago, the BOA conceded, and it appeared that the team would be comprised of English players only.

Team G.B. at the 1908 Olympics.
Added by Porterfield

Naturally, we were caught off guard this morning when the BOA made an announcement that players from all four home nations will be eligible for the squad. Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland responded with a joint statement reiterating their unwavering stance, but as far as the English FA and the BOA are concerned, there will be a unified team. These strange happenings leave me wondering:

Nobody's stance has changed whatsoever, so why make a false announcement?

If the BOA is allowing all players a fair shot, but their football association's are opposed, will there be a rift between players and their associations?

Why do politics and tribalism always find a way to obstruct the beautiful game?

In my opinion, the English FA and the BOA are trying to stir the pot, getting this controversy into more headlines across the U.K. so that Scots, Welsh, and N. Irish might reconsider their point of view. They are making it clear that players from those countries will be allowed to play despite what their football associations say, perhaps in the hopes that a player like Gareth Bale might go over the heads of his own association (Wales) for the chance to win Gold. What do you think?

By Tuesday, the clock failed its only mission. On the very day that Olympics tickets went on sale, the countdown ceased for several hours, stalling at 500 days, 7 hours, 6 minutes, and 56 seconds.

I expect better from the Swiss, but mistakes happen. We can forgive them. It's just a silly clock.

But wait, the story gets better. The countdown clock was not the only London Olympics-related event on Monday night, as the first episode of BBC Four's new television program Twenty Twelve, also premiered. Twenty Twelve is a mockumentary about people who work for the "Olympic Deliverance Commission" (presumably based on the real-life London Organising Committe of the Olympic Games), who are tasked with putting on the games without a hitch.

Added by Porterfield

As mockumentaries go, such as The Office, the protagonists are bumbling fools who are in over their heads. In the first episode, they work to install a giant countdown clock, designed by a famous arist, in front of the Tate Modern. Sound familiar? I bet you can't guess what happens next. Their clock has an intrinsical design flaw and stops working, thus stirring up a PR mess for the main characters. Yes, this episode aired the night before the exact same thing happened in real life. What are the odds?!

A month ago, two English Premier League teams were bidding over use of London's Olympic Stadium. West Ham United was chosen over Tottenham Hotspur FC to become the stadium's official tenant after the Olympic Games, and their bid was finally approved this past Thursday. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, and the Department of Communities and Local Government granted West Ham the rights to take over the venue, most likely because their proposed plans for the stadium did not involve removing the massive athletics track untouched. Tottenham wanted to rebuild the stadium to create a more personal venue without a track separating the fans from the pitch, and that's probably why they lost the bid (although this is the exact reason they should have won, in my humble opinion).

London's Olympic Stadium
Added by Porterfield

Tottenham has yet to publicly lament their loss, but out of nowhere, League One club Leyton Orient has come forward to express their dissatisfaction with the decision. Leyton Orient's current stadium and surrounding fan base is located directly between the fan bases of Tottenham and West Ham (as shown by this amazing football supporters map of London [1]) Their stadium is in the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Park and as shown in the map, their fan base is quite compact. Thus, the club is under the impression that a West Ham relocation to Olympic Stadium would damage their own club's standing as top ticket in the neighborhood. Personally, I think Leyton Orient needs to chill out. If they actually believe their fans would abandon the club in favor of West Ham, just to shave time off their commute to the stadium, they should cut their losses now and start downsizing. True fans would never abandon their team and they are the only fans worth having.

On the other side of things, is this really the right move for West Ham? They are selling their old venue, Upton Park, to pay for renovations of the Olympic Stadium, which they will only be leasing. It doesn't sound like a very promising move, especially considering that West Ham is currently in position to be relegated from the top flight of English football. If they find themselves in a rut outside of the Premiership, they'll be faced with lower ticket sales in a very large and expensive stadium. It might also be a disgrace to the legacy of the London Olympics if the Games' primary venue is occupied by a second-tier football club.

Das Olympiastadion Berlin
Added by Porterfield

I also think that having an athletics track separating the pitch from the supporters is a no-no. Isn't there some clever way to lower the track and field down in the ground and put bleachers over the track? Anyway, I attended a World Cup match at Berlin's renovated Olympiastadion in 2006, and although it was an amazing experience, the absence of that big blue track would have made it more intimate and exciting for the fans. I love EPL stadiums for their intense atmosphere. The supporters sit close enough to the sideline to receive a Cantona Kung-Fu kick to the chest. If I were a fan of West Ham, I'd be bummed about the track and worried about filling that monstrosity. I mean, cozy old Brisbane Road is right around the corner. Championship, League One, what's the difference?

What do you think about the future of London's Olympic Stadium? Any Hammers supporters out there?

UPDATE: Tottenham, apparently, has just now decided to publicly lament their loss. They have "questioned the legitimacy of the decision" and officially begun legal proceedings to challenge the Olympic Park Legacy Company's selection of West Ham. [2]

Earlier this week, the secretary-general of Iran's Olympic Committee sent a letter to the IOC threatening to boycott the 2012 Olympics because, according to the Iranians, the official logo for the event spells out the word Zion.

If this logo did spell Zion, it would not only be offensive to some cultures and the spirit of the Olympics, but completely irrelevant to athletics. But of course, it doesn't say Zion. The IOC responded predictably, "The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else."
I have my own opinions on the aesthetic appeal of this logo, which I will not divulge, but I will tell you that I find the state of Iran and their aforementioned Olympic Committee to be absolute jokes of organizations. Politics aside, how can you threaten to boycott the Olympics when even the most die-hard fans of the games are incapable of naming even one of your nation's athletes, let alone the particular events in which your nation is known to excel?

Added by Porterfield

I was going to put my foot in my mouth when I researched further and discovered that Iran has won 48 medals in their Olympic participation. Alas, my foot remained firmly on the ground, because I noticed that all 48 of their medals were won only by men, competing in only three events: wrestling, Taekwondo, and weightlifting. Okay, Iran, we get it. You hate Jews and your men-folk are really good at combat and lifting heavy things. But guess what? Nobody will care if your team is absent from the games. Some may actually rejoice, but nobody will be upset except your poor citizens. You are doing the Iranian athletes and their fans a terrible disservice, jeopardizing their success and good times just because your lunatic government officials think that London's finest graphic designers are secretly Mossad agents. Furthermore, I'd like to point out that you're Olympic Committee also has a logo, and it looks like a nasty splotch of toothpaste! I find that offensive, so I am boycotting YOU, Iran.
