Yemen first participated at the Olympic Games under its current name in 1992 and sent its athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic edition since then. Before the country's unification in 1990, Yemeni athletes attended the Games separately in Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988, either representing the Yemen Arab Republic (or North Yemen, 1984 and 1988) or the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (or South Yemen, 1988). Currently, no athlete from Yemen has ever won a single Olympic medal.
The Yemen Olympic Committee was established in 1971 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1981.
